Utah Supreme Court
Highest court in the state. Five Justices (one Chief Justice, four Associates), elected on a retention basis to 10-year terms. Final authority on state law and constitutional questions. Est. Utah Const. Art. VIII.
Utah Court of Appeals
Intermediate appellate court. Seven judges serving 6-year terms. Reviews most civil and criminal district court decisions (except first-degree felonies and capital cases, which go directly to the Supreme Court).
Utah District Courts
Trial courts of general jurisdiction. Eight judicial districts across the state. Handle civil, criminal, domestic, juvenile, and probate matters. See Utah Code § 78A-5-101.
Utah Justice Courts
Limited-jurisdiction courts at the city and county level. Handle class B and C misdemeanors, infractions, and small claims. See Utah Code § 78A-7-101.
